The gift to be simple is the gift to be free Is the gift to wind up where we ought to be And when we find ourselves in that place just right It will be in the valley of love and delight When true simplicity is gained To bend and to bow we shan't be ashamed To turn, turn, shall be our delight Til by turning, turning, we come round right Fly’s in the buttermilk, shoo, fly, shoo Fly’s in the buttermilk, shoo, fly, shoo Fly’s in the buttermilk, shoo, fly, shoo Skip to my Lou, my darling Ain’t got a jay bird, a red bird will do Ain’t got a red bird, a blue bird will do Ain’t got a blue bird, a jay bird will do Skip to my Lou, my darling Cat's in the cream jar, shoo, cat, shoo Cat's in the jam jar, shoo, cat, shoo Cat's in the pickle jar, shoo, cat, shoo Skip to my Lou, my darling When true simplicity is gained To bend and to bow we shan't be ashamed To turn, turn, shall be our delight Til by turning, turning, we come round right The gift to be simple is the gift to be free Is the gift to wind up where we ought to be And when we find ourselves in that place just right It will be in the valley of love and delight It will be in the valley of love and delight

No One Knows 02:49
Under the weather, under the center Under a torrent which could be rain Why rain, why now I said, please don’t bring me more And the whispers fill my ears With the wisdom of their years While the clouds roll past the sun But everyone cares and everyone shares Everyone thinks But no one knows Under suspicion and indecision Within a moment of yet more pain Why pain, why now I said, please don’t show me more And the whispers fill my ears With the wisdom of their years While the work remains undone But everyone cares and everyone shares Everyone thinks But no one knows (Everyone thinks) But no one knows (Everyone thinks) But no one knows But no one knows

Levee Seven 10:10
The heavens rained down Some said Judgement Day Were that true, I figure Some how more water would be coming my way Levee six started to fail Levee three gone, and it washed out Campton All that’s left is one earthen wall We pack and we pray, please save Levee Seven In the heat of summer Well, there’s skeeters and flies When you live on the river You know one day the water gonna rise Levee six started to fail Levee three gone, and it washed out Campton All that’s left is one earthen wall We pack and we pray, please save Levee Seven Well Mama grabbed the Bible Photos saved by my wife Load up a truck Load up a boat Oh, Lord, how best to leave this life Levee six is now no more That put paid to all might have beens Levee Seven goes. Levee Seven gone Oh damn the rain that damned… Levee Seven The rain will stop; people will come So-called leaders and those famous-fors They come to pity, they come to be gone ‘Cause water hazards wreck golf scores Levee six is gonna be rebuilt And there’s loans for all the folks of Campton All we had is now downstream So seek you me in the mud that was Levee Seven Levee Seven The heavens rained down, the heavens rained down Levee six started to fail, Levee three gone, and it washed out Campton All that’s left is one earthen wall We pack and we pray, please save Levee Seven Well Mama grabbed the Bible.

Two boys alone with nothing to do The Moon at Midnight, so high up in the air With Daddy’s car and a stolen attitude They drive through the town as if nothing is there Rushing through the night boys playing boys Asking of the night silence and noise Staying in the night til the night comes crashing down Two boys alone outside 10 Park Avenue Looking at a dark house with an iron gate One boy says she’s waiting inside The boy that’s left sits back to talk with Fate Rushing through the night boys playing boys Asking of the night silence and noise Well, staying in the night til the night comes crashing down One boy alone and he’s straining to hear Loaded with suspense, his mind shuts down Dawn comes cloudy with scattered questions What does he know about the things that they found Rushing through the night boys playing boys Asking of the night silence and noise Staying in the night til the night comes crashing down, down, down Rushing through the night boys playing boys Asking of the night silence and noise Well, staying in the night til the night comes crashing down, down, down I believe that money is the root of all evil That and sex will bring out bad people There’s a guilty scion so the wallet comes out Sharp suited lawyers start to cry on reasonable doubt Don’t seem fair, justice just is for those who pay. They’ll crack your head, shoot you dead, and for what you say If you’re ever in Houston, don’t you gamble, don’t you fight And all you vertical people, got to shut up, keep it tight Unless you got the buckaroos bucko to make it right

Twilight tumbles would you like to share Rain in summer, autumn for the vine Please let us parlay and pick tasks so rare So you may say to me your love is mine Go and capture a sparrow bright blue Rain in summer autumn for the vine And have it carry me from here to you So you may say to me your love is mine Then you write me a new noteless tune Rain in summer autumn for the vine And then you sing it under the May Hunter Moon So you may say to me your love is mine Darkness comes down. Would you like to share Rain in summer autumn for the vine Now won’t you tell me are these errands fair And what would it matter if your love was mine

Jennie Shane 04:50
Jennie Shane, my little love. Jennie Shane, my darling Jennie Shane, my one true love. I lost my Jennie Shane I met her in junior high, she wore a rebel’s dress Restless soul, she caught my eye. Oh my, she took my breath Sheriff Tom too noticed her, pulled her in one day What went on inside, we guessed, ‘cause Jenny just won’t say For some weeks, us angry kids, tried to let folks know Sheriff Tom ignored it all, and the powerful let it go Jennie Shane, my little love. Jennie Shane, my darling Jennie Shane, my one true love. I lost my Jennie Shane Jenny Shane, she left that town, she went so far away I used to hope she would be back and Sheriff Tom would pay Jennie Shane, my little love. Jennie Shane, my darling Jennie Shane, my one true love. I lost my Jennie Shane On it went, my real plain life. Go along the thing I’d do I stayed back and found a wife and our kids played and grew Jennie Shane (My little love) Jennie Shane (Jennie Shane) Oh my darling Jennie Shane, my one true love. I lost my (Jennie Shane) I met her (Jennie Shane) in junior high (Jennie Shane) She wore a rebel’s dress Restless soul (Jennie Shane), she caught my eye (Jennie Shane) Don’t matter now I guess Jennie Shane, Jennie Shane Jennie Shane, Jennie Shane Jennie Shane, Jennie Shane Jennie Shane, Jennie Shane

They say a thousand steps, I lost count at 33 I’ve come down to watch the waves, stare like the lonely out to sea Well nothing lasts forever, can’t even see if that’s wrong The waves will wear down this rock I’m on. The ocean too strong Breakers arrive, the ocean roars but won’t say And I just watch in the hope the waves bring a better day Climb back to the headland. Sure I shall rise no more Back amongst the works of man. Pilgrim on a foreign shore Well nothing lasts forever, can’t even see if that’s wrong The waves will wear down this rock I’m on. The ocean too strong Breakers arrive, the ocean roars but won’t say And I just watch in the hope the waves bring a better day

about

The conclusion of a single year agreement with a distributor suggested we take a few more tiny steps on our journey to learn digital mastering. We began 2020 with a vague understanding of loudness. We ended with a personal standard, releasing at a standard, -12 db LUFS. But early in the year we were mixing to -8 db LUFS. As we had evolved our release strategy to multiple (6-10) singles and a follow-up album which included most of the singles, this meant when TSMTWF had to have its tracks remastered. One song had a rhyme mistake, which I fixed. Another got released with a rhythm guitar track offset. The distributor flagged what could have been conflicts, and these included remastered and corrected tracks. My protests that relied on metrics failed to convince and so, with one song, a prelude was prepended. After release, I regretted this. So this fixes all mistakes. Well that's what this release means to us.

What does it mean to you? We'll suggest this is a song cycle that starts in the morning, when an alarm awakes the narrator out of dream and the day starts with optimism. It ends as the narrator stares at the ocean and chooses to wearily carry on. We merge back into the ocean/dream as the cycle concludes. In between, there are natural disasters, corruption, and regrets. In short, the stuff of folk music. And indeed, we write new lyrics adapted from traditional bluegrass/folk songs.

Most of the album was written May-September, 2020 and Covid-19 provides a clear subtext. My family is full of bio-scientists and MDs and we were aghast as the US and UK governments were looking at the pandemic as a way to profit first and help last. This was a public health issue first and foremost. If you lost someone, or have to deal with long-term effects of the virus, my condolences and my sympathy for any anger you feel that some of the misery would have been avoidable with other leaders in charge. I can't prove it, but I believe it.

Before I go, Greg Pryor helped make this album better than it otherwise would have been and his contributions are deeply appreciated. Collaboration was done by e-mail and digital file exchange. Here's hoping that soon he has the time and we can work in the same room.
