I was on a beach that says it’s safe Talking with a Ralph who said it “Rafe” Told me building wealth was his basic line But he meant his, he took all of mine Lord don’t let desire drive me again I’ve seen where it goes I know where I’ve been Taken shaken aching with the sun going down Carpinteria, Carpinteria break down Hanging with the rich off Padaro Lane It got so loud drowned out a passing train I’m all right, footloose in a danger zone I wake by the tracks hurt in every bone Lord don’t let desire drive me again I’ve seen where it goes I know where I’ve been Taken shaken aching with the sun going down Carpinteria, Carpinteria break down Let me break down every book On your shelf No no nobody Can fool you like you fool yourself Shiny cheating people have fun for awhile Getting my everything with the hint of a smile Now I have to demo every load-bearing lie I’m a honky tonk zero, a shell of a guy Lord don’t let desire drive me again I’ve seen where it goes I know where I’ve been Taken shaken aching with the sun going down Carpinteria, Carpinteria break down Carpinteria, Carpinteria break down Break down Break down Break down

A Hard Land 03:48
A hard land under clear sharp skies A blue so deep and a red so bright A dusty wind blows hot indifference On Kansas Joe with mischief in sight Joe Johnson looks across the desert Turns around and heads back to town A crackling mind that likes to vex Sad Horace perfect to bring down Horace Jones dissipated this morning He whored and drank the day before A heavy pain now fills his heart Miss Louise said that’s it no more Louise Jane puts the pen away Blots the letter she wants to send Wrote too much, didn’t say it all Clerk Billy takes her prayer to mend Two Bit Bill bites the hard-earned coin Saw no despair in her lowered eye Sacks up the letter for an outbound train Addressed to New Orleans and Miss Lorelei Lorelei never got the final letter Train robbers let it blow across the sand Passing and wary she often denied All those who left for a hard land A hard land and sheltering sky Nothing but horizon everywhere Ash to ashes it’s dust to dust A hard land returns your stare

When I was young, I used to wait upon a boss I’d hand him a plate Give him a bottle when he got dry and brush away any blue tail fly Jimmy Crack Corn and I don’t care. Jimmy Crack Corn and I don’t care Jimmy Crack Corn and I don’t care. The big boss has gone away He’d ride around in the afternoon my job to follow with a hickory broom The horse of course being oh so shy when chomped upon by a blue tail fly Jimmy Crack Corn and I don’t care. Jimmy Crack Corn and I don’t care Jimmy Crack Corn and I don’t care. The big boss has gone away One day he rode around the farm, the flies so numerous, they did swarm I thought I saw one land on a thigh. Well just could be a blue tail fly Jimmy Crack Corn and I don’t care. Jimmy Crack Corn and I don’t care Jimmy Crack Corn and I don’t care. The big boss has gone away The pony reared, he jumped, he pitched there goes the boss into a ditch So he’s gone, Coroner asks why. Doc, mark it down one more blue tail fly Jimmy Crack Corn and I don’t care. Jimmy Crack Corn and I don’t care Jimmy Crack Corn and I don’t care. The big boss has gone away That’s my testimony, can’t you see. No other witness to gainsay me And if you think well maybe I lie, you double check with a blue tail fly Jimmy Crack Corn and I don’t care. Jimmy Crack Corn and I don’t care Jimmy Crack Corn and I don’t care. The big boss has gone away

We Roll Away 02:53
There was a woman who had a blue house Who suddenly saw a small gray mouse Which was sneaking by an old orange cat Who was busy napping on her best hat How about that Last round called deedle dee doe No more no more deedle dee day Last round served deedle dee doe Fare well mates and we roll away Now the woman jumped up and grabbed her hat You know this woke up the old orange cat Who then chased around the small gray mouse One more crazy day for the blue house For the blue house Last round called deedle dee doe No more no more deedle dee day Last round served deedle dee doe Fare well mates and we roll away So the woman escaped her old blue house Left the door open so the small gray mouse Could run away with the slow orange cat At the inn a-drinking she lost her hat How about that Last round called deedle dee doe No more no more deedle dee day Last round served deedle dee doe Fare well mates and we roll away Away, one more time Last round called deedle dee doe No more no more deedle dee day Last round served deedle dee doe Fare well mates and we roll away Fare well mates and we roll away

about

This tenth full-length album has at its heart a lyric gimmick. Every song, but one, has the color blue or reference to the blues musical genre in the lyric. The one that does not has the line "Now I have to demo every load-bearing line," which ties in nicely with a theme, through external malice or personal self-delusion, song narrators are in metaphoric cages. Some are coping. Some are despairing. And, once again, we think we've produced another album which reads as a theatrical musical without book.

One other production trend, and maybe this is its culmination, is our utilization newly acquired guitars, wah pedal, and button diatonic accordion while exploring multiple rhythm tracks with a programmed DAW drum track overlaid on a fixed sequence from a drum machine app.

One other note for the Wikipedia entry that will never be written. This is the first album in five years where there's no contribution from friends. Tried. Didn't work out.
